Weddings In Holycross

As a Tipperary native, I have a special appreciation for our rich heritage and countryside. On our very doorstep we are spoiled with many exquisite wedding venues situated in stunning locations. Cashel Palace and Aherlow House Hotel immediately spring to mind, due to their beautiful gardens and panoramic views. Here in Tipperary there are a wealth of options to suit different budgets and tastes, whether it is modern or traditional. Some venues are perfect for small, intimate gatherings and others cater for larger numbers and more elaborate affairs. I mentioned in an earlier post, how this list keeps growing – more and more venues have attained their license enabling them to hold civil ceremonies and civil partnerships which I have also had the pleasure of filming during the winter season.

Often, I find the bride and groom do not need to travel to another location for their video and DVD. They simply need to step outside. This struck me recently as I arrived to film a wedding at Holycross Abbey. It was a bright, crisp morning, a little colour was coming into the trees and I paused to appreciate the beauty of the Abbey. The Abbey’s vibrant history, careful restoration and beautiful location on the river Suir, combine in perfect harmony to create an idyllic backdrop for the perfect wedding.

The Abbey was founded in 1168 for the Benedictine order and later transferred to the Cistercians. It takes its name from the Relic of the true cross, brought to Ireland around 1233 by Plantagenet Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Henry II. For 800 years pilgrims travelled from all over Europe to visit the beautiful relic which was set in gold and decorated with precious stones. Most of the Abbey’s buildings date from the 15th Century, however parts of the nave – the main body of the church, belong to the original structure built in the late 12th Century.

Wedding Video Holycross

Over the years, I have filmed many weddings at Holycross. From a videographer’s perspective and in terms of creating great footage, this location has it all. I can appreciate its layout and the best spots for capture the guests unwinding once ceremony has ended. I know where I can best position myself to become inconspicuous to the bride and groom, and capture moments without anyone sensing my presence, which helps them relax and therefore creates naturally great footage.

On the morning of the wedding, when I begin filming, the bride may feel a little tense and worry about acting naturally, but after a few minutes, she often doesn’t realise I’m there at all! This is something I have a natural sense for and a skill I have fine-tuned through years of experience. Before a wedding, I will often travel to the location and get a feel for the layout and imagine how the crowd will fill the room and the grounds, and which areas will give great uninterrupted footage. However, at this stage I have filmed nearly every location throughout Tipperary and a great number throughout Munster so much of this comes naturally to me.

During my winter season, which was busier than usual, I worked with fabulous young couples to create wedding videos as unique as they are. This time of year is always the most exciting. A busy spring season awaits, when everything is refreshed and renewed, and I look forward to all that it will bring. Every spring, young couples approach me with their new ideas, vibrant colours and music choices and how they want to create their perfect wedding DVD.
